Top storylines to watch: Figure skating

Yuna Kim In 2010, South Korea’s Yuna Kim set records with her short and free skate programs on her way to capturing gold at the Vancouver Olympics. Can she do it all over again in Sochi?

Patrick Chan Canada’s Patrick Chan heads into the Olympic season as the reigning three-time world champion after taking fifth at the 2010 Games. His biggest challengers include Spain’s Javier Fernandez, Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu and Denis Ten of Kazakhstan.

Evan Lysacek American Evan Lysacek, who won gold at the 2010 Games, could factor in to the medal conversation as well, though he’s trying to make a comeback after having not competed since winning in Vancouver.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the American ice dance team that won silver at the 2010 Games, has won two of the last three world championship titles. Their main rivals are Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, whom they train with year-round in Detroit. Davis/White will also lead the American effort in the new team event in figure skating, which will open the Olympic Games.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir Virtue and Moir won gold in front of an electric crowd in Vancouver four years ago, the first ice dance team to win in their Olympic debut.

Ashley Wagner Reigning two-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner will be in the medal conversation in Sochi, though Kim is favored to win gold. Japan’s Mao Asada, the silver medalist in Vancouver, is another big name to watch.

Gracie Gold Gracie Gold, just 18, is another American for fans to keep their eyes on alongside Wagner. The Chicagoan was second at the U.S. National Championships in 2013 and then sixth at the World Championships in March.

Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov Russians Tatyana Volosozhar and Maksim Trankov will be a key to Russia’s effort in the new team competition as they also factor to be medalists in the pairs competition, an event Russia had dominated until it was left off the podium in 2010.

Maia and Alex Shibutani Siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani train with Davis/White and Virtue/Moir in Detroit and will try to match their bronze-medal performance from the 2011 World Championships. There are three ice dance teams from the U.S. that will go to Sochi. The Shibutani’s free dance - set to a Michael Jackson medley - is a crowd favorite.

Yevgeny Plushenko Russian veteran Yevgeny Plushenko, who won silver in Salt Lake, gold in Torino and silver in Vancouver, is trying to become the first figure skater to win a medal at four straight Olympic Games since the 1930s.
